Student Grant Requirements

student grant requirements
What are the co-signer credit requirements for student loans?

My son needs about $ 10,000 – $ 12,500 for college next year after scholarships, Federal student loans, grants, etc. He has no established credit. Will he be able to do this on his own? I filed bankruptcy in September 2005 and was discharged in January 2006. Am I eligible to co-sign? My income consists solely of disability income and I don’t think that I will be returning to work anytime in the forseeable future. Thanks.

How old is your son? If he’s 18-19 he probably doesn’t have the established credit history to get a private loan on his own without a cosigner. The requirement is 2 years of credit history for most private student loans.

If you have a bankruptcy, you will not be able to cosign for him. Bankruptcy usually stays on your credit for at least seven years. Hopefully he has someone else who could cosign for him (private loans do not require a parent to cosign, only Parent PLUS loans do). That person will need a good credit history or credit score. Some companies require a low debt-to-income ratio, others don’t.

Parent PLUS loans generally have relaxed credit requirements. Not relaxed enough for you to get a bankruptcy by, but if your son’s other parent is in the picture and has decent credit this could be an option, depending on your situation.

Ask your son’s financial aid office for advice on student loan options. Schools usually offer different lenders to fit different student needs – perhaps even loans that do not require a cosigner. Despite what you are currently reading about in the media, 99.9% of these folks do good work for cheap pay. Look to them for advice. Good luck to you and your son – be proud!

Addendum: I think your question says you’ve maxed out on federal loans already.

Financial Aid Night

Posted by Sandra Wright

financial aid night
Can you truly be denied Financial Aid in College??

I want to attend a university, but I am coming out of a full time day job and wanting to go to school full time at college during the day, and work a minimal job at night. Now I had made good money but not enough to go to a university……plus my parents make decent money, but again not enough to put me through school. So my question is, will FAFSA look at my previous years Income and my parents income and give me no financial aid at all, simply based on that year alone??? I will be making crappy money in about three months and will really need school help. Anyone know if FAFSA will still allow me loans…..please tell me they won’t give me crappy amounts a semester??? Thanks

Can you be denied aid? Yes, but under some very specific circumstances. To be fully denied aid you have to have defaulted on a prior student loan or owe a repayment of financial aid funds you received in excess of your eligibility previously, or to have been such a poor student (academically) that you have been suspended from eligibility.

In reality, yes, you can be ineligible for GRANT aid depending on your and your parents income in the previous year, but you will still be eligible for some loans. Will a loan be enough? Probably not, because the federal loan limits are set by regulation, so you either use the payment plan or you and/or your parents borrow other loans to cover.

Can you appeal for change of income? Yes, speak with your financial aid office AFTER you have filed the FAFSA and after your income changes. However, you will probably have earned 3/4 of your 2006 income by the time you quit this job in August, so it will not affect your eligibility this year significantly enough to change your eligibility for grant. That really takes a major disruption, in your case, of parent income–no if your mom or dad made significant overtime money and won’t this year, it probably won’t be a consideration until they can show 2007 W-2 forms to the financial aid office.

So what do you do to keep your borrowing under control? Try a lower cost college at least to do your general education and required pre-requisite coursework, making sure that your preferred school will accept these credits when you do transfer (look for an articulation agreement or transfer compact between the schools, they’ll tell you if one exists if you ask). This can save you significant dollars and still allow you to get the education you want without the big bucks to repay you could have.

Financial Aid Online Education

Posted by Sandra Wright

financial aid online education
Is there any kind of financial aid or scholarship available for online education? Does anyone know of any?

Many online colleges administer federal aid, so you could at least be eligible for the Federal Stafford Loan and the Federal Pell Grant if you show a lot of need. Some schools (if they’re been around for a while) will also offer Federal Perkins Loans and Federal SEO Grants.

Please, though, if you want to apply for these types of aid, don’t go to fafsa.com — it’s a huge scam. You should only ever file the FAFSA by going to the Dept. of Ed’s website, here: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov . If you need assistance or have questions, there is free help available in a lot places: check out FinAid (http://www.finaid.org ) or contact your school, former high school, or library.

There are numerous scholarships available from a wide variety of sources. Try any or all of these scholarship search engines:

Financial Aid for Students with Children

Posted by Sandra Wright

financial aid for students with children

The Variety Of Financial Aid Available To Students

Education is one of the most important aspects of any person’s life. In most cases, a child without education ends up spending his or her life doing petty things and trying to survive through his whole lifespan. Furthermore, education is a major part of a person’s personality. This is why the majority of governments across the world have set up a variety of programs and associated instruments providing financial aid to a child looking for proper education.

This is especially important for a child who wants to study abroad. Studying abroad can be extremely expensive owing to the higher currency rates and standards of living in most first world countries. However, these expenses are mainly driven by the difference in currency rates. Most children aiming for this kind of an opportunity look for student loans, scholarships, grants and other forms of financial aid. As the subject is sensitive, student loans are considered to be easy to get up until the candidate sees the procedure. There are a variety of loans that a student can apply for. Again, the available loans can vary in a number of ways i.e. some require collateral, some have extremely tough interest rates, some are lenient with rates, some do not give loans to students going to universities that don’t have ranking etc.

In fact, most students also look for part time jobs while studying abroad in order to support themselves or collect enough to repay their loans. Doing part time jobs is something that depends directly on a number of variables. The ability to take on a part time job depends directly on the type of course the student is going for, the university that he or she is in and even the place and country that he or she will be located in. For example, a course in medicine would make it very difficult for a student to take on a part time job. Also, many universities do not approve of their students doing part time jobs and expect the student to be wholly devoted to his or her studies. Similarly, there are certain countries that do not allow foreign students to take on odd jobs while on a study permit. However, many universities in countries like these offer jobs on campus to a student looking for one.

Another way to find financial aid is on merit. These are scholarships provided by government organizations to students with a lot of talent. Furthermore, even private organizations provide scholarships to students with potential. These become a part of the organization’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). However, it should be added that getting these kinds of scholarships can be extremely difficult as many of these require tests, write-ups and interviews for judging the student’s potential. Also, the difficulty is not restricted to the qualification criteria but also to the competition. There are only a few scholarships available if one considers the large number of students that are actually looking for and applying for them. Needless to say, there are many ways for a talented student to obtain financial aid and this is good for the country as a whole.

Financial Aid Training Manual

Spabeautyschools.com Featured School of the Week May 14, 2007: Pat Goins Beauty School

Individuals pursuing career fields as hair stylists, manicurists, estheticians, or salon managers can gain comprehensive education and training through Pat Goins Beauty School. Boasting four locations throughout Louisiana, Pat Goins Beauty Schools offer curriculums in cosmetology, manicuring and cosmetology teacher training in spacious classrooms and large clinics averaging about 10,000 square feet in size.

School Director, Jim Goins emphasized the school’s accreditation with the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACASS), “Applicants can be assured of a certain quality of education, and the membership (to the NACASS) indicates that the Pat Goins Beauty School attempts to stay up to date with the latest changes in cosmetology education and areas of expertise”

Pat Goins Beauty School’s cosmetology program encompasses 1,500 training hours in hair styling, cutting, coloring, high-lighting/low-lighting, manicuring (cultured nails, nail tips, gel tips, nail repairs), pedicures, and skin care. All of the school’s programs emphasize real-world training, Goins adds. “We operate a clinic in order to give students a realistic view to what students will be doing when they graduate — as much for their benefit as possible so that students gain real-life experience.”

The 600-hour manicure program at Pat Goins Beauty School offers in-depth instruction in pedicures and manicure, sculpture nails, gel nails, silk wrap, nail tips, and other related studies.

Its cosmetology teacher training program entails 750 instructional hours in how to make lesson plans, prepare visual aids, perform basic paperwork (i.e., registration, graduation, etc.), and submit hours to the state board. Students are also taught about calculating grades, cash register operation, and other essential business skills. In addition, those in the cosmetology teacher training program are required to develop lesson plans for each lesson in the cosmetology manual prior to graduation.

As an added incentive, Goins stresses how the school works with experienced students. “We give all transfer students a test to determine level of education and we make an effort to give credit for out-of-state classes,” he explains. Once students successfully complete individual courses of study, graduates are awarded diplomas. Candidates may then gain licensure after they’ve passed the national exam.

Pat Goins Beauty School participates in financial aid programs, such as the Federal PELL grant, supplemental education opportunity grants, and other student loan programs.

When asked what might compel prospective students to apply to the school, Goins emphasized the school’s longevity: “The fact that we’ve been in business for 38 years says we’re doing something right.” And, while Pat Goins Beauty Schools offers extensive career placement services, Goins explains that in his 21-year career, they have only had to assist one student. “We get calls every week for our students.”

SpaBeautySchools.com recognizes Pat Goins Beauty School and applauds its quality standards in cosmetology training. If you would like more information about this fine cosmetology school, please visit Pat Goins Beauty School today.

College Grants For Single Mothers In Canada

Every country will agree to the fact that the women require adequate education to move ahead in life, especially the mothers. Single mothers have special needs as they are the only support to their family and kids. Money, time and confidence are three obstacles in their path to acquire education. Canada, like any other country, has identified these problems and hence, has started college grants for single mothers in Canada.

The Canadian government realizes the problems faced by single mothers and has started various grants to help the mothers cope with the problems by providing required education for them. Like in the United States, to apply for federal grants in Canada, one needs to apply it through the FAFSA centre. The FAFSA is an online centre set up for receiving the applications for the federal and state grants. The applicants usually need to submit their previous year’s tax records as it is the eligibility criterion for receiving the grants.

The latest feature regarding the college grants for single mothers is the Canada Student Grants program (CSGP) which has clubbed the various federal student grants into a single program and is earnestly trying to reach out to single mothers who like to pursue their studies. This new program helped 245,000 students in the academic year 2009-2010 and is very easy to apply for. Some of the grants under this program have been listed below:

1) Canada Student Grant for Persons from Low-Income Families: This grant provides $250 per month to students of low-income household who also are eligible for a federal student loan, and is available to undergraduate and college school program.

2) Canada Student Grant for Persons from Middle-Income Families: As the name suggests, this is granted to a middle-income class student also qualifying for a federal loan. The selected student will receive $100 per month of study.

3) Canada Student Grant for Persons with Permanent Disabilities: This grant is only for those students who are handicapped or crippled. The state offers $2000 every academic year for these students to cover their education costs and tuitions.

4) Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Persons with Permanent Disabilities: Those handicapped students who face exclusive expenses for interpreters or tutors are provided $8000 annually from the state.

5) Canada Student Grant for Persons with Dependents: This grant is exclusive for mothers. $200 per month of study is provided to them for each child which they have under 12 years of age.

6) Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Students with Dependents: This is for single mothers who are pursuing part-time education. For every child under 12 years of age, the single mother is entitled to $40 per week of study. Single mothers with three or more children are entitled for $60 per week.

7) Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Studies: This scholarship is only for part-time students. The state grants up to $1200 per school year for the eligible part-time students.

The Government of Canada is very keen on its CSGP and realizes the marked changes this program has brought about in the lives of the deserving students, who are only held back due to the financial crisis. College grants for single mothers in Canada is becoming a reality and this can observed from the improved lives of the mothers.
