What is the limit for financial aid for a degree of 128 hours?
I’m not sure what you’re asking – so if I don’t get this right, feel free to ask again.
If you are asking about financial aid from the federal government, there are very definite limits to some programs. The maximum Pell grant for this school year is $4731. The maximum Stafford loan that an undergraduate can take this year is $7500 if they are dependent and $12,500 if they are independent – but that’s if you’re a college junior or senior. Those amounts are less if you’re a freshman or sophomore.
There is also a lifetime maximum on Stafford loans – for dependent students, that amount is $31,000.
If you’re asking about private (non-governmental) loans, the supposed maximum is the equivalent of your Cost of Education (specific to your university) minus any other aid that you have received.
As an example – if your school has a Cost of Attendance of $30,000, and you have already qualified for $8000 from the federal government and $2000 in scholarships, then the maximum private loan would be $30,000 minus the $8000 in federal funds and the $2000 in scholarships.
Your ability to qualify for federal assistance is determined by your financial need. That figure is determined when you complete a FAFSA form and submit your financial information to the US Department of Education.
So what is the limit? Well, if you’re willing to borrow from non-government sources, the “limit” is pretty much ‘whatever you need”. Just keep in mind that:
a. you’ll probably need a cosigner to borrow from non-governmental sources and..
b. you’ll pay your loans back over a 10 to 30-year period, and the interest that builds up over that length of time is a killer. You will pay far more back than your borrowed, so you MUST borrow responsibly, keeping in mind how much your eventual monthly obligations are going to be.
how can i get out of a financial aid load if the school closed?
i was going to a school and it had got closed down…i sent the paper back that they they had me fill out to get out of the loan but they (financial aid) is still charging me payments every month. does anyone know any way i can get out of this loan?
My problem with the system is the financial aid based on parents income for most students. First, some students whose parents do well financially dont see a dime from them for college, but the student has to use their parents income to determine how much grant/scholarship money they get. Second, students with divorced parents get an advantage b/c they always claim that they are living with the parent with the lowest income. EX. Mom makes 20,000 a year, dad makes 80,000 a year, they’re married and kid gets no financial aid. Same incomes, but parents divorced, kid goes to college for next to nothing. Your thoughts?
It would be next to impossible to make the system fair for everyone, and unfortunately, for some students things are unfair.
For your example, the student is supposed to provide parent information for the parent whom they live with. And the asker is correct, the student does only report income for one parent, the one they live with. I know in some cases they don’t, but that is not unfairness of the system, that is the student being untruthful, and they can be untruthful in any circumstances, ie. plenty of students say on their FAFSA their parents are divorced when they are really not. Schools verify a minimum of 30% of all students who receive aid, so some students who are not truthful get caught while others do not. And lets remember, for students whose parents are divorced, they face a whole different set of circumstances that students whose parents are married do not. AND for students whose parents are divorced, their parents are supporting TWO seperate households, while parents who are married are only supporting one. If a divorced parent is re-married, they are required to report the income for the stepparent.
For parents who do well financially but their children don’t receive any of that money, that is really an issue between the student and the parent, If the parents won’t support their own child’s education, why is it the governments responsibility, because on the other end of the spectrum, if the system allowed for students who don’t receive any money from their parents to only report student income, every college student would claim their parent doesn’t help them, and for the average college student, if their FAFSA was based off of the student income alone, every student would have an EFC of 0, and be eligible for full financial aid, and the Federal Student Aid Programs would go bankrupt in the first year, and then no one would receive any aid.
There has to be a set of rules in order for the Federal Student Aid Programs, and every time a standardized set of rules is put into place, there is going to be someone for whom the rules are unfair.
One issue I have with the FAFSA calculation, is that the more a student works while they are a student, the more their EFC increases which means less aid, and I feel they are being penalized for working, which is unfair.
