Assuming that I’d qualify as a lower-income student…
I think loans are pretty much unavoidable, even for lower-income students. I’m the lowest income you can be (EFC 0) and I still have loans. Granted, they’re Stafford loans, so not as bad as some other ones, but they have to be paid back. Student loans are just a part of life. Learn to live with them.
For Duke, your grant is much less than the total cost. You still have to remember things like room & board, books, etc.
Are you getting the 31k number from Princeton’s average scholarship package for 2011? If so, you shouldn’t be planning with estimates. Wait for an official number and then do your calculations.
Your question is a bit confusing. In general, though, financial aid departments at schools like these with big endowments can be really generous to low-income students. You just have to wait and see what they offer you in both grants and loans, then talk to someone from fin. aid about your offer. Also, don’t forget about federal grants like the Pell. Your college will likely not be the only source of aid.
Shouldn’t the feds hold up money to any Uni or college that refuses to allow recruiters or ROTC?
For five years, Yale Law School has fought to restrict military recruiters from its job fairs because of the Pentagon’s policy that bars openly gay or bisexual people from the military. But with the federal government threatening to withhold $350 million in grants if the university does not assist the recruiters, that fight will all but end on Monday.
After an appeals court ruled in favor of the Defense Department on Sept. 17, the law school said it would allow recruiters from the Air Force and Navy to participate in a university-sponsored job interview program for law students on Monday afternoon. For now, the legal battle to stop the recruiters is over, said Robert A. Burt, a Yale law professor and the lead plaintiff in the case.
