How To Go To College For Almost Free (Interview with Ben Kaplan)

Posted by Sandra Wright

Synopsis about book from barnesandnoble.com Uncertain about how you’re going to pay for college? Afraid of drowning in a sea of student debt? Well fear not–Benjamin Kaplan once felt that way too. But that was before he discovered that hundreds of millions of dollars in scholarship prizes are waiting to be won. After winning nearly 000 in unrestricted merit-based scholarship money (which covered virtually the entire cost of attending Harvard), Kaplan has come storming back with a no-holds-barred guide showing how you can do it too. In How To Go To College Almost For Free, Kaplan builds upon his own experiences, and adds insights from interviews with other scholarship winners–revealing insider secrets that put scholarship money within the reach of all students, regardless of their GPAs. The result is an “indispensable resource for high school and college students, as well as for families caught in the middle-income financial aid crunch.”

Student Grant Bursary

student grant bursary
The basics of financial support at university?

My family has an income of 38000 (pre tax), so what financial support am I eligible for? Am I correct in thinking I can get a bursary of £1000, and then what would the maintainance grant allow? Am I right in thinking that it would be 4000? What about other support and the student loan?
I’m interested in studying in London, Imperial.

Most university web sites have this information. Otherwise you may visit university open days and ask from the student counsel.
If you are thinking of a teaching career you may get up to £9000 per year if you are prepared to do Science or Maths. For most of the subjects they give £6000 per year on top of tuition fees.

I got a student loan of £5000 from HSBC when I did my masters degree but ended up paying £8000 back as they added repayment insurance charge on top of interest. Do not fall into that trap.
I think career development loan would be a good option. But you may have to get that organised through the university.

Student Aid Overhaul Passes House
The federal government is moving toward the most sweeping overhaul of college financial aid in decades. The House of Representatives voted for the measure as part of its passage of health care legislation Sunday. Under the proposal, private lenders would no longer make federally subsidized student loans.

Obama Grant for College Students

Why are you voting for Mccain, isin’t that a bad choice?

I don’t believe Mccan is going to be fit for office he is very close to his death age, and Palin could become president that be a scary though for a person with very little experience. Not to mention do we really want another 4 years of a George Bush regime, lets face it the past 8 years have been terrible, high gas prices, bad economy, most foreign countries hate us or don’t respect us anymore. The housing market is declining, the value of the dollar is dropping, fewer jobs, and absolutely no college funding like there used to be. I’m a college student right now and I can definitely admit how bad we are takinga beating thanks to George Bush taking away so many college grants spending it on the military.

I definitely would rather vote for Obama, and lol even Matt Damon thinks Mccain is a terrible choice as well.

Ok, anyone who uses the “heartbeat away” claim to say that voting for McCain is going to put an inexperienced person in office AND follows it up with “I’m voting for Obama” is an IDIOT.

Now, if you made the McCain complaint and followed it with a comment about voting 3rd party you are fine.

Obama has a similar amount of experience as Palin (although his is less applicable than hers) therefore if your argument against her is inexperience yet you support Obama you are currently engaging in a logical fallacy which means that you have brain functionality of a lemming.

Canada Student Grant Program

Transferring next year to a 4 yr. school for either economics or pre-law…advice?

Currently I’m at a 2 yr. state school (first semester) & I plan on staying here next semester as well (I do not plan on graduating from here). I currently have a 3.7 GPA, am on my schools basketball & track teams, and I am also involved with a classical concert band. I want to transfer (preferably) to a private 4-yr. college (possibly state) for fall 2010 for either economics/finance or pre-law (I want to eventually become a lawyer). I don’t really care where the college is, I’m open to trying something new (USA and possibly Canada). I already have some colleges in mind, but I want other opinions as to what would be some of my best bets for those programs as a transfer student considering I keep my GPA the same and the activities i’m involved with (if possible I’d like to continue with them). I basically want to get into the best school for my GPA. Also, any schools that give out good scholarships/grants would be nice too! Thank you for your help!

You can major in anything and go on to law school, so I’d go ahead and plan on econ/finance if that’s what interests you. As for where to go, it’s generally easiest to transfer your credits to whatever your state school happens to be (provided you’ve been taking the recommended core courses): plus, it’ll probably be the cheapest option. But if you have a list of schools in mind, you should contact them directly and ask.
